About Chanakya

Namaste - the management and the staff of Chanakya (pronounced: cha-nuck-ya) hereby extend a warm welcome to you.

This restaurant has been named after the great Indian philosopher, thinker and statesman Chanakya who was an advisor
and Prime Minister of the King Chandragupt Maurya during the period 321 BC - 297 BC. The Mauryan dynasty, as has been
reported by historians, saw the Northern India flourish, prosper and develop in all dimensions of human endeavour.

Chanakya conceived and implemented a Central Federal system in India for the first time and these ideas formed the model
for efficient government in the coming years. In New Delhi today a very exclusive area, which houses foreign
embassies, is named after Chanakya.

The interior of this restaurant attempts to capture the decor of the palaces and the type of sculpture prevalent
during the Chanakya era. India was essentially Hindu during that period and the reproductions of the wall panels
and the "Sun Chakra" (wheel) in the roof reflects the Hindus culture prevalent at that time. The food being
offered originated also from the Northern parts of India. This cuisine is known for its heritage of thousands of years.
The authentic, tradition rich, North Indian cooking uses a lot of herbs and special ingredients with many of the dishes
being cooked in special clay lined deep oven called "Tandoor".
The real challenge of good Indian cooking is in maintaining the original taste of the meat or vegetable and adding a
special flavour to it through the "Masala".

Have an enjoyable meal and we look forward to welcoming you again.
